Dr. Jan-Piet Knijff, Schramberg, Organ
Dr. Jan-Piet Knijff was born in 1966 in Haarlem, Netherlands. He inherited his love of music and language
from his father. After graduating from a humanities-focused high school, he studied organ with Piet Kee
and Dr.Ewald Kooiman, and also harpsichord, piano, church music, and musicology.
In 1997 he won both first prize and the audience prize at the Bach Competition in Lausanne, and in 1999 he
emigrated to the USA. There he earned his doctorate at the City University of New York. He was cantor at
various churches, music director of a synagogue, and taught organ, harpsichord, fortepiano, chamber music,
music history, performance practice, and music theory. As a baritone, he sang solo parts in three
operas by Gilbert and Sullivan as well as in Bach's St. John Passion.
During a two-year professional stay in Australia, he presented "Jan-Piet's Choice," a kind of musical
talk show, almost one hundred times and organized four festivals featuring music by Beethoven, Brahms,
Dvorak, and French and English composers. Back in America, he completed a Master's degree in Classics.
He also arranged for a historic English organ to be acquired by a church in New York.
Since 2018, Jan-Piet has been living in Europe again. In addition to his activities as a cantor and
freelance musician, he teaches Dutch, Latin, Ancient Greek, French, English, organ, and piano.
